The Singing News is a monthly magazine devoted to Southern Gospel Music. It was founded by J G Whitfield. Originally published as a newspaper, format was eventually converted to a colorful magazine. Whitfield sold the magazine to Maurice Templeton, who later sold it to Salem Communications. Jerry Kirksey served as the magazine's editor for many years. Danny Jones has been the editor since Kirksey's retirement.
In January 1970, The Singing News began publishing a monthly airplay chart. This chart was ultimately expanded to report the Top 80 songs each month.
The Singing News also launched the Fan Awards in 1970. The Fan Awards offer a wide variety of categories with the results based on votes from subscribers.
